Advantages of work from home - Working from home can be a great way to earn a living. On the plus side, working from home means that you save on transport fees and fuel etc. however, it doesn't work well for those who see it as an excuse to laze around the house all day. Many people all over the world earn a full salary by working from their own home and it really suits some people. There are all kinds of reasons why people work from home, such as stay at home parents, people with disabilities, those with new ideas and more.

 

Advantages of Work from Home

Working from home means that you save on transport and fuel costs, where as if you were travelling out to work you would have to spend on fuel or public transport. You may also save money on the fact that you would not be dining out for lunch and going for coffee each day like you would if it was an average day at the office.

Depending on what your job involves, you may be able to be flexible with your working hours and leaving work in the middle of the day for an appointment or an event that you wouldn't be allowed to leave work for if you were working for a company.

Although you should really make an effort to feel as if you have gone to work, even though you are only travelling from your bedroom to your home office, you don't always have to spend long periods of time getting ready in the mornings.

Many parents who wish to stay at home with their children often choose to set up an at home business, where they can spend more time with their children. Although it doesn't always work out that you get to spend valuable time with your children, you may be able to save money on kindergarten bills and instead hire an at home child minder to watch over the children when you need to crack on with your work.

The majority of the time, those who work at home are often self-employed and therefore do not have a boss to answer to, which most would agree is a great advantage!

Points to Consider About Work from Home

Although many parents see it as a great way of spending more time with their children, if their job involves a lot of much needed concentration and quiet, then they may also need the added help of a child minder to amuse the children when you are working.

Work from home should be considered in the same way as if you were going out to work. You must have working hours, tasks to complete, deadlines and routine. Of course, you can take an hour out if you really have to, unlike if you were employed by somebody. However, you should really try to make sure that you set yourself some ground rules where your working hours are concerned, so as not to disturb your working routine. This means getting dressed in the morning, starting and finishing at certain times, allowing yourself at least one day off and setting yourself targets for the day.

Remember that if you are self-employed and working from home, you must allow yourself time to work and do the jobs that your employer would normally take care of for you. Allow yourself time to sort your accounts, receipts, insurance payments etc.

Would Working from Home Suit You?

Working from home doesn't suit everybody and therefore not everyone is successful at working from home. You must be self-motivated and hard working to work from home. If you get easily distracted and prefer to have somebody instructing you on what to do, then this is probably not the right career step for you.
You should be able to start working at a specific time in the day and try hard to meet your targets for the day. If you are hard working, independent, self-motivated and persistent then you may well suit working from home.

Just because you are working in the comfort of your own home, you should ensure that you have and can separate your home life from your work life. Designate an area and make it your home office and only enter in to this space during working hours. Try to free this space of possible distractions that may be a constant annoyance to you whilst you work. For e.g. a personal mobile phone, a television, magazines and books that are not related to your work etc.

If you happen to be working from home whilst there are others in the house, make sure that you maintain a work friendly place for you to work in and refrain from letting anybody who has no connection with your work (i.e. doesn't work with/for you) in to your working environment during office hours.

Fill your home office with objects and tools that are related only to your work. If you are a stay at home parent, make sure that your children know not to disturb you during working hours, and only do so if it is an emergency.

Some work from home careers may mean that your working hours vary. Writers, translators and other freelancers usually find that they are bombarded with work at some times and then suffer dryer spells on other occasions. You may experience times when you are extremely busy, and need to work longer hours to ensure that you can complete the project. During the busy times even working from home can seem that there are not enough hours in the day to complete your work, you may need to start earlier and finish late in the evening. Neverthless this can be an Advantages of work from home because you will be obviously be earning plenty of money!
